Taxi apps in Lima and Cusco: Uber, Cabify, inDrive and the official airport taxi

Urban mobility in Peru, for the typical traveler, is app + official airport taxi — not a rental car in Lima or central Cusco. This guide summarizes what the PeruCheap guide documents, reviewed in Sep 2026 against the official sources cited.

Why an app (and when the official counter wins)

Golden rules cited from Smartraveller / State Dept in the PeruCheap guide:

• Prefer an app or hotel taxi
• Do not walk alone in isolated areas at night
• Do not display your phone on the street
• Windows closed in the car
• Check plate/model; board only at the app pickup point
• Do not accept “help” from strangers with luggage in the lobby

Lima and Cusco have elevated risk of theft, “motochorro” (motorcycle theft), and distraction. Lima Historic Center: daytime visit; sleep in Miraflores, Barranco, or San Isidro. At parties and crowds, pickpocketing rises.

2026 table: what to use

Install Uber, Cabify, and inDrive before your flight (PeruCheap guide checklist). Carry soles in small bills for emergencies; Visa/Mastercard work well in hotels and malls, but micro-transport and much of the street is still cash.

Jorge Chávez Airport (LIM, Lima)

New terminal: since 1 June 2025 Jorge Chávez has operated from the new terminal, accessed via Av. Morales Duárez (MTC). Pickup and drop-off zones changed compared with older guides (ATU, checked Sep 2026).

Official taxi (recommended if you arrive tired or late night):

Apps (Uber, Cabify, inDrive): operate in Lima. At the new terminal, taxi and app pickups use the Vía libre lane, only in marked bays (ATU). Do not accept lobby solicitors. Cabify points riders to parking lot E1 (movilidad.pe, checked Sep 2026) — follow the point shown in the app.

Official alternative: the Airport Express Lima bus to Miraflores — S/20 per person traveling alone or S/15 per person for 2+ (Lima Airport); departures ~hourly, 7 a.m.–10 p.m. from the airport (operator FAQ) (checked Sep 2026).

Practical LIM tips:

• ATMs (BCP, Interbank, etc.) on arrival: withdraw the minimum; airport fees are usually worse
• Airport SIM/eSIM exist but are usually pricier than in the city
• Typical destination: Miraflores / Barranco — agree price at the official counter or trust the app fare
• Do not rent a car just for Lima (traffic, parking)
• Night return from Barranco/Miraflores: taxi apps

Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport (CUZ, Cusco)

• Lima–Cusco flight ~1h30
• City altitude ~3,400 m — on landing, walk slowly; avoid effort and alcohol for the first 24–48 h
• Historic center typically 10–20 minutes away

Options:

• Official taxi at the terminal (confirm the fare at the counter before you get in — guides quote different figures)
• Uber/apps with designated point
• Hotel transfer (useful for ~1 a.m. arrivals)

Avoid aggressive lobby taxi drivers; if using a street taxi, agree the price before. Do not take a long walk with luggage on day one. Carry soles in small bills.

In central Cusco: on foot + app/taxi for climbs and the airport. Renting a car in Cusco is generally not worth it for the typical tourist (narrow streets, altitude, parking, Andean roads). Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu use van/tour/train — not the “Uber to the citadel” model (there is no car road to Machu Picchu).

Lima city: where the app shines

• Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro: tourist circuit with good app coverage
• Historic Center: go by day; return by app
• Metropolitano / corridors: option if you are saving (learn the line first)
• Nightlife in Barranco (Ayahuasca Restobar, etc.) and Miraflores: always app home

For the south coast (Paracas / Ica / Huacachina): this is not an “app ride” from Lima — use Cruz del Sur / Peru Hop / vans or a full-day tour (see Ica/Paracas article).

Cusco city and surroundings

• Plaza de Armas, Procuradores, Plateros, San Blas: walkable after acclimatizing
• Saqsayhuamán and the circuit above the city: taxi/app or tour
• Avoid alcohol for the first 24–48 h (altitude) even if the app is one tap away
• For Ollantaytambo / Machu Picchu train: transfer or van, not “figure it out in the app at the last minute” in high season

Money in the car: what the PeruCheap guide reminds you

• Currency: Peruvian sol (PEN / S/)
• PIX does not pay rides or restaurants in Peru
• ATMs: BCP, BBVA, Interbank, Scotiabank — refuse DCC (ATM conversion); withdraw in PEN
